Truck crash kills 14 people in western Thailand

Posted by MAX

Associated Press

BANGKOK - A six-wheeled truck crashed into a passenger truck on a dangerous mountain road in western Thailand on Wednesday, killing 14 people a month after a deadlier accident on the same stretch of road, authorities said.

The accident was the latest fatal crash on a mountain road in Tak province known for its treacherous dips and curves where more than 300 accidents occurred last year, said provincial governor Suriya Prasatbunditya. The road is frequented by buses and trucks traveling to and from the border with Myanmar.

The driver lost control while driving down the steep, winding road, before the truck hit three cars and slammed into a pickup truck carrying at least 10 passengers, he said. Both drivers, along with 12 passengers, were killed in the crash, while two people were injured.

The governor said the crash occurred 500 meters (546 yards) from where a double-decker bus carrying municipal workers plunged off the road into a ravine, killing 31 people, last month.

"This is yet another sad accident which shouldn't have occurred," Suriya told The Associated Press. "Since the major accident in March, we put up more warnings and rubber strips to help slow down road users, but that's still not working."

Road accidents are common in Thailand, where safety standards are poor and road rules are rarely enforced. Last year, more than 8,600 people died in accidents on Thai roads.

Brawny and muscular, but lacking cojones: 2014 Ford F

Posted by MAX on Tuesday, April 29, 2014

Jeffrey Jablansky / New York Daily News

In the early 1990s, when fuel was cheap and the mullet hairdo was falling out of fashion, Ford decided, quite authoritatively, that the world needed a pickup truck with the heart of a sports car -delivered straight from the factory to the drag strip.

Thus the F-150 Lightning was born, powered by a V-8 engine that happily gulped down gasoline and returned blistering straight-line performance for the short-cab, long-bed pickup. The model proved so successful that it carried on into several, subsequent model years. A supercharged Lightning followed, also equipped with a big V-8, and lasted until 2004.

A decade later, Ford has chosen to bring back the Lightning, but this time, it's called "Tremor."The short-cab, long-bed formula remains the same -unlike other F-150s, which are available to configure in seemingly endless permutations-but it's undergone a complete heart transplant.

The F-150 Tremor is a conversation piece before you even get behind the wheel. A stick-on graphics package (T-R-E-M-O-R, pasted onto the side of the bed) is the only exterior differentiating factor between Tremor package F-150s and lesser trucks. Keen eyes will note the Tremor's set of large wheels and tires, and its short cab, long bed configuration. It immediately appears perfect for the Sunbelt and southern California, where hauling needs can be frequent but the asphalt is almost always warm and dry.

Inside, Alcantara and black leather cover bucket seats with color-matched piping. A three-person bench seat is not available, and neither is a second row of seats, owing to the F-150 Tremor's lack of rear doors. The interior trimmings are as basic as is possible, offering niceties at a level more appropriate of a pickup truck for sale several years ago. A navigation system and MyFordTouch, Ford's proprietary system combining entertainment and guidance features, were the two major options fitted in the cabin.

At the F-150 Tremor's heart is a 365-horsepower V-6 engine that Ford calls "EcoBoost,"designed to displace a thirstier V-8, maximizing efficiency at scant compromise to performance. Rear-wheel drive is standard, as on the model tested, and four-wheel drive is available. The turbocharged unit is second only to the F-150's optional V-8 that makes 411 horsepower, but stands to return significantly better fuel economy -if a 5-mpg overall gain (13 vs. 17 combined mpg) is something to write home about.

But the thrill of driving an F-150 Tremor is not in bragging about its efficiency to neighbors and iPod-less straphangers. No -even in times of sub-$5 gasoline, power and road presence trump frugality and time spent at the pump. The F-150 Tremor is best experienced in a straight line, preferably far from busy city traffic. With a confident driver's foot planted firmly on the gas pedal, the traction control works diligently to keep up with the amount of power routed (in our case) through the rear wheels.

The obvious upside to the F-150 Tremor's V-6 is its sheer ability to send the Spartan truck flying. A bonus is the mighty, audible whoosh from the air-hungry engine, emitted each time the turbo spools up to produce more power. It's a tingling sensation that tickles the brain. There's something giggle-inducing about an unmodified pickup that can embarrass a pony car.

Jeffrey Jablansky / New York Daily News

On the other side of the ledger, the F-150 Tremor falls dynamically short of its competition, in terms of over-boosted steering, weak-feeling brakes, and ride comfort that erred on the side of "too firm."By comparison, the Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra and Ram 1500 have more refined movements that simultaneously offer better control and feel. The F-150 feels floaty on city streets and on the highway, with ultralight steering that moves its wide body. This combination, compounded by slick tires and the lack of four-wheel drive, offered unfortunately little assurance during a recent April snowstorm.

Enthusiasts seeking a more adventurous F-150 that also offers peace of mind for motoring, on-road and off, have a solution within the model lineup: the F-150 Raptor, a rambunctious options package for the F-150 that turns mere pickups into dune-ready cavorters.

Ultimately, this realization caught on at Ford, too. The F-150 Raptor package will no longer be offered beyond the 2014 model year. As pickup enthusiasts gear up for the arrival of the slimmer, more advanced 2015 F-150, this move offers Ford a chance to re-evaluate the needs, wants, and desires of its potential shoppers.

Until then, warm-weather dwellers nostalgic for the 90s should get on line. The F-150 Tremor may not be for everyone, but it's a hoot for those who have the chance to get behind the wheel.

Vital Stats: 2014 Ford F-150 Tremor 4x2

Base price: $37,260 (includes $1,195destination charge) Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive, 3.5-liter, 365-horsepower V-6, 6-speedautomatic transmission EPA fuel economy: 16 city / 22 highway mpg Major competitors: Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Nissan Titan, Ram 1500 Also consider: The Ford F-150 SVT Raptor ($45,900) offers more performance and a more audacious driving experience for a similar base price.

When you need a container, only for a small amount of time then renting it is the way to go. A 20-foot container can be rented for $50 - $80 per month and larger 40-foot containers can be rented for $85 - $ 125 per month. These rates vary depending on different things, in this article we will look at some things that will hopefully give you some room for negotiation, having said that never forget to negotiate as the worst that can happen is that they will say no.

Truck Accidents Happen!

Posted by MAX

Many different situations can lead to serious trucking accidents. Some truck accidents might be the result of actual negligent driving, or mechanical problems, while road or weather conditions can also be a contributing factor. Among one of the most common causes is fatigued driving. It is unfortunately all too common for many truck drivers to ignore the law which regulates how long they can drive. This can and often does result in a loss concentration, distracted driving or actually falling asleep at the wheel. Another problem in truck wrecks is having improperly or overloaded trailers. Just checking on how the trailer is load and making sure it is in compliance with the law, can be helpful in preventing accidents involving trucks.

Manslaughter charges: Vincent George. Photo: Channel Ten

The drug-affected truck driver who collided head on with a sedan after crossing onto the wrong side of the Hume Highway may have veered to avoid a learner driver just before the crash occurred, a court has heard.

Sydney woman Nerida Credaro told the Parramatta District Court on Tuesday she was having a driving lesson with her family on the highway on June 24, 2012 when a red B-double loomed up behind her before veering off onto a grass median strip in the middle of the road.

Seconds later the truck, being driven by Vincent Samuel George struck the red Ford Mondeo which was being driven in the opposite direction by Calvyn Logan, 59, and which also held his parents Donald and Patricia Logan, both in their 80s.

All three died on impact.

Mr George is now facing trial on three manslaughter charges and has pleaded not guilty.

Ms Credaro said she was driving her family's gold Toyota Sportivo with her father, mother and younger sister in the car, at around 80 km/h when she looked up and suddenly saw the red B-double behind her.

"Just in my rear view mirror I saw the truck sort of come out of nowhere," said Ms Credaro.

"[A few seconds later] I looked forward and then I saw it go off the road in front of me.

"It would have been going a lot quicker than me. It was behind me and then in front of me in a few seconds.

She saw the truck veer off the road across the grassed median strip, and her younger sister screamed as she saw it collide with the Logans' red sedan coming the other way.

The court heard that seconds after the truck crossed over the median strip Ms Credaro asked her father, "Was that my fault?". When asked whether he thought his daughter had contributed to the crash in any way, her father, David Credaro replied, "No way."

Earlier, another driver who witnessed the incident, Katherne Lane, said the red B-double simply appeared to turn off the road.

"It looked like the truck was turning off onto a road that didn't exist," Ms Lane, told the Parramatta District Court.

"It was like when you're coming up to an intersection and you turn off, except he didn't slow down.

The court heard that Mr George had a significant prior history of driving under the influence of drugs, including methadone. This included a serious accident four months to the day before the fatal crash when he rolled another B-double truck he was driving in the Riverina region of NSW.

The court has heard that in addition to the drug use, Mr George had been suffering from fatigue at the time of the fatal collision, the result of his driving for the previous 22 hours with rests of just four-and-a-half hours.

The trial continues.

Fatal crash: truck driver looked like he was 'turning off into road that didn ...

The drug-affected truck driver who veered across the Hume Highway and collided head-on with a sedan, killing its three occupants, looked like he was "turning off onto a road that didn't exist," a court has heard.

Vincent Samuel George, 34, is facing three manslaughter charges in the Parramatta District Court over the deaths of Calvyn Logan, 59 and his parents Donald and Patricia Logan, both in their 80s, on January 24, 2012.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The court has head that the Logans were driving along the Hume Highway near Menangle after visiting relatives when Mr George's red B-double, travelling at around 100 km/h in the opposite direction, veered across a 15m grass median strip and collided head on with their red Ford Mondeo.

The prime mover went over the top of the Mondeo crushing the entire front section of the sedan and killing all three passengers.

It is the Crown case that Mr George was later found to be under the influence of a large dose of methadone which he had obtained illegally and that had been driving for the past 22 hours with a break of only four-and-a-half hours.

On Tuesday, a Sydney mother who was driving to Wollongong on the day of the incident described seeing Mr George veer slowly out of the lane he was travelling in and onto a wide grass median strip.

"It looked like the truck was turning off onto a road that didn't exist," the woman, Katherine Lane, told the Parramatta District Court.

"It was like when you're coming up to an intersection and you turn off, except he didn't slow down.

"The truck pulled up a huge cloud of dirt - I was actually a bit worried about my own safety because I couldn't see very well.

Another driver on the highway at the time of the incident, Central coast resident Michael Castelnuovo, said the red B-double had been in the left lane but then veered across to the right lane "and just kept going and kept going".

"It wasn't in an overtaking motion...it just kept going and veered into the grass," said Mr Castelnuovo, who was travelling with his partner and son to Wollongong in a blue commodore.

"It was a gradual 50 degree, 45 degree angle. It just kept going until it hit the grass.

Only one of the five witnesses who gave evidence during the morning session said they saw the driver's brake lights go on at any point during the incident.

They said that he appeared to be travelling at or slightly above the 100km/h speed limit for trucks on the highway.

Crown Prosecutor, Philip Hogan told the court on Monday that there was a dispute as to why Mr George, an experienced driver, had veered across the road, with some witnesses stating it appeared to be completely without reason while others said he had swerved to avoid another car that was overtaking a P-plater. Mr George said he had in fact swerved to avoid the P-plate driver himself and had suddenly lost control.

Mr Hogan also told the court that Mr George had a significant prior history of driving under the influence of drugs, including methadone. This included a serious accident four months to the day before the fatal crash when he rolled another B-double truck he was driving in the Riverina region of NSW.

Just two months later - 50 days before the Logan's death - Mr George had allegedly suffered a black out while loading tiles. A subsequent blood test in hospital again revealed the presence of methadone.

The court has heard that in addition to the drug use, Mr George had been suffering from fatigue at the time of the fatal collision, the result of his driving for the previous 22 hours with rests of just four-and-a-half hours.

Mr Hogan said that key issues in the trial would be what happened immediately prior to the fatal collision, how much methadone Mr George had taken, and the influence of this dose on the accused.

The trial continues.

NEW DELHI: German commercial vehicle maker Daimler AG has displaced Eicher Motors to become the third biggest truck manufacturer in India, less than two years after its debut in the country. Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, the Stuttgart-based company's wholly-owned subsidiary, now commands a 4.3 per cent share of the domestic truck market, according to sales data for the quarter to March compiled by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

The multinational automaker is already the world leader in truck manufacturing and the third biggest maker of luxury cars. It owns premium car brand Mercedes-Benz. It sells trucks under the Bharat Benz brand in India.

"We have been able to sell more than 10,000 trucks in the past two years and are the fastest growing brand in the Indian commercial vehicle market," Florian Laudan, spokesperson for Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, told ET. "Our strategy of adapting the best of technology from our global portfolio for Indian customers has worked so far, which can be measured from our consistently growing sales."

Mumbai-based Tata Motors and Chennai-based Ashok Leyland, however, still dominate the Indian truck market, with 59per cent and 27per cent shares in the quarter to March. Eicher had 3.9 per cent share of the market in the same period. According to industry executives, Bharat Benz sold most trucks in the 25 tonne and 31 tonne segments, where, unlike its competitors, it does not offer any discounts.

"The company has been able to make a dent due to its superior product range and delivering high performance in mileage and power," one industry executive said. "Daimler has been very serious for its India product strategy. Its experts from Stuttgart studied the Indian market for almost five years and analysed all major truck brands to drive a competitive edge. After an indepth research, only they have made the blue print for Indian projects." Delhi-based Eicher Motors, which operates as VECV, a joint venture with Swiss truck major Volvo, plans to launch its new Pro Series to consolidate its position and offer direct competition to Bharat Benz and other brands in India.

Toughening the Lighter 2015 Ford F

Posted by MAX

The first aluminum pickup truck faces some PR challenges, so Ford is doing what it can to replace the image of an aluminum beer can being easily crushed on the forehead of John Belushi's iconic "Animal House" character John "Bluto" Blutarsky with more robust imagery. Toward that end, Ford organized another tech forum to shed some light on the toughening measures the company applied to its #1 Bestseller, and the 10-million-mile durability regimen to which it subjected the new truck. That number represents a 2-million-mile extension of the 2009 F-150's test regimen, and essentially doubles the testing mileage accrued by its predecessor. And it's probably accurate, because Ford is releasing it after Chevy claimed 12.5 million test-miles for its Silverado. (Ram claimed 7.5 million miles for its 2013 truck.) Read the 2015 Ford F-150 First Look HERE Let's start with a deeper dive into improvements made to the still mostly steel frame, which is designed to meet 130 performance targets. The final design evolved from more than 500 computer-aided engineering analyses each of 38 different original designs. The result is a stronger frame that weighs as much as 60 pounds less.Smarter, not harder. Corners provide a lot of rigidity, so instead of just four of them, the front ends of the frame rails, where the bumpers mount, now include 12 corners. Instead of looking like a simple box, it's more of a big, fat cross, allowing the metal gauge thickness to be reduced slightly. Thick-n-thin. Sections of the rail that used to be hydroformed revert to closed-section welded boxes. Hydroforming provides the strength of a continuous tube but requires a uniform material thickness, whereas strength optimization can suggest different thicknesses for the inner and outer halves of the frame. Some sections boast thickness variations along the length of the part, using tailored blanks. When the steel is rolled out, the thickness (in this case) varies from 1.8-2.8mm to replace a part that was uniformly 2.6mm thick, saving 5.8 pounds. Alloyed forces. High-strength/low-alloy steel in two grades now comprises 77 percent of the chassis. And one aluminum crossmember under the engine replaces a steel part. More is more. Parts of the frame have a larger section height for more strength, and an eighth steel frame rail is added.

New 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6. This all-new workhorse is designed to meet the toughest truck duty, with a compacted graphite iron cylinder block like that in the 6.7-liter PowerStroke diesel. Other features:Cracked Caps. The main-bearing caps are formed integrally with the engine, machined, then fracture-split. This is common practice for connecting rod big-ends, but rarer for engine-block main bearings. It ensures perfect dimensional accuracy. A die-cast lower ladder structural oil pan further strengthens the block. Variable Oiling. A two-mode oil pump features two pressure levels and provides the appropriate volume to support the pressure needs under low and high loads. Start-Stop. Fuel-saving auto start-stop comes standard, but is disabled when towing or operating in four-wheel-drive mode. Engine torture tests. A random sampling of the myriad abusive tests new Ford truck engines get subjected to include: 400 hours alternating between the as-yet-unannounced power and torque peaks. (We observed peak torque of 350 lb-ft from 2600-4500 rpm on the dyno monitors.) 300 cycles of freezing the engine to -20 degrees (F), starting it and running it to its power peak until fully hot, then shocking the cooling system with -20-degree coolant to shock the gaskets. 700 cycles from ambient temperature to 230 degrees and back.

And as for that aluminum body and box? Ford subjected the cab and box to all sorts of tortuous shaking and bending stresses in the laboratory, and built 11 prototypes stamped with the previous generation's styling to discretely carry out real-world testing, which included a run in the What about where steel meets aluminum? You may have heard that

aluminum and steel don't like to touch. The aluminum sacrifices itself to the steel in a process called galvanic corrosion. All the aluminum and steel frame and body parts are electrocoated with primer, then a proprietary insulating material is bonded to the aluminum prior to painting in areas where it will contact the steel. The steel fasteners get coatings and are typically isolated further by a coated aluminum washer when connecting to the box or cab. All of this is extensively tested in acid baths, high humidity, and salty environments. Still, customers will need to consider galvanic corrosion before screwing or bolting anything directly to the bodywork or box, and future restoration folks will need to find correct factory-spec fasteners, not hardware-store matches. But for now, nobody needs to worry about the aluminum F-150 folding up like Bluto's beer can in the line of even severe duty. Baja 1000 off-road rally. One of those trucks incurred a dent and deep scratch two years ago that still looks like it happened backing into the building this morning. In addition, the company placed 11 aluminum boxes in service with known severe-duty customers including Burrick Mining, Duke Electric. These customers reportedly never figured out the beds were aluminum after two years of service. And meaningful revisions to the final design were gleaned from these experiences that ensure the aluminum box outperforms its steel predecessor, including an increase in the gauge thickness of the box floor from 0.95 to 1.4mm, and a redesign of an access panel in the tailgate that was curling up at the edges. (It was made more underflush and its edges hemmed over.)
